  • Countryside Community Center: Located at 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego, the Countryside Community Center houses a beauty salon (which can be reached at 687-0450), a craft room, TV room, library, dining room, as well as the administrative office of Tioga Opportunities, Inc. and the Department of Aging. In addition to a hot meal every weekday, senior citizens enjoy ceramics, painting, quilting, exercise programs, and line dancing.

  • Health Insurance Counseling: Trained volunteers assist seniors with Medicare questions, understanding Medigap policies, EPIC and general health insurance questions. Staff assist with the application process for the Medicare Savings Program. Counseling is by appointment.

  • Long Term Care Insurance Counseling: This program is primarily directed to those ages 40 through 60. As part of the enhanced HIICAP program, trained volunteers provide information and education to individuals interested in long-term care insurance options.
 

The Department of Aging provides a wide variety of community based programs at the Countryside Community Center.

  • Senior Health Promotions/Senior Health Fair: The Department conducts a variety of health promotion activities including: blood pressure screenings, hearing screenings, and other prevention activities such as a walking program, an exercise program, line dancing, aerobics and a health fair. Throughout the year, staff makes health related presentations at dining centers and distributes handout materials to homebound meal recipients.

  • Title V Senior Community Employment Program: The goal of the program is to move income-eligible workers ages 55 and older from subsidized to unsubsidized employment

  • Weatherization/Home Energy Assistance Program: “WRAP” serves eligible low-income, energy vulnerable, elderly households who would benefit from weatherization and other energy conservation services.

  • Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP): The Department of Aging certifies eligibility for HEAP applicants seeking assistance with their heating bills. This program is provided under agreement with the Tioga County Department of Social Services and in conjunction with Tioga Opportunities, Inc.’s Department of Community Services.

  • Legal services: This service is provided by contract with Tompkins Tioga Neighborhood Legal Services. Attorneys provide assistance to seniors on non-criminal legal issues including Social Security benefits, health and long term care, housing, utilities, guardianship, abuse, neglect and consumer matters.
