Head Start is for...
Head Start Programs: Head Start serves low-income and/or disadvantaged children providing Early Childhood Intervention, Parental Involvement, Education , Health, Nutrition, and Disability Services. The program is available in four communities, serving five school districts in center-based classes. Home-based programs are available in Newark Valley and Waverly/Owego. The program:
Center programs are 4 or 5 days a week with different length of days in different sites. All center programs serve breakfast and lunch and for full day programs, an afternoon snack is also provided. The Home based program provides the same services as the center programs except that the home visitor visits the home of each family weekly where she assists the parents in teaching their own children. The home based program is for income eligible families of preschool children, usually three year olds., works with the child, and helps the entire family attain needed health and social services. Twice a month, the home based children and their parents gather for a socialization time in the classroom for a three hour program. Center Programs
Waverly has a morning and an afternoon class Monday through Thursday, each lasting for three and one half hours. A snack and a meal are served at each session. Owego has two classes, one for five days a week for six hours Monday through Thursday and for three and a half hours on Friday. The other Owego class is four days a week for four hours per day. Breakfast and lunch are served in both classes and an afternoon snack is provided in the six hour program. Newark Valley class is four days a week for six hours a day. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are provided. Candor is four days a week for six hours a day. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are provided.
The Home based program provides the same services as the center programs except that the home visitor visits the home of each family weekly where she assists the parents in teaching their own children. A three hour group class is held about twice a month.
