Picnic Day Celebration

Written by
We made the most of a rainy day recently when the Department of Aging offered its annual Picnic Day celebration on Friday, June 16th at the Countryside Community Center.  The stormy weather couldn’t deter the 60 guests who joined us for this event.  Although the lawn games stayed boxed up this year, attendees were still able to enjoy the musical talents of the “Old Country Band.”  Several even got up to dance along with the music!  The “Build Your Own Burger” Bar was a hit, and went along perfectly with the picnic theme.  Please keep an eye on the “Aging News” section of our website for more information about upcoming events.  We would love for you to join us!

The World Health Organization lifted the “public health emergency of international concern” designation for Zika last November. But that status change did not mark the outbreak's end. Between then and January, some 4,000 new cases were reported in just the U.S. and its territories.

Contracting the Zika virus during pregnancy can lead to birth defects such as damage to the brain and microcephaly. Pregnant women are encouraged to avoid travel to areas with Zika and advised to talk to their healthcare provider before traveling to understand the risks if in the event they do need to travel to a Zika area.

Tioga Opportunities, Inc. offers “Understanding Long Term Levels of Care”

Owego & Newark Valley

Are you or a loved one facing decisions regarding long term, out of home placement? Exploring options for long term care is confusing and complicated. It is difficult to understand what acronyms like ACF, ALP, ALR, EALR, and SNF really mean. The Department of Aging will welcome Maria Motsavage from Levene Gouldin & Thompson, who will explain the differences between these levels of care, as well as whether Medicare, Medicaid, or other types of insurance will pay for them.

This program is being offered on:

Monday, July 10th from 9:00-11:00 AM at the Countryside Community Center (9 Sheldon Guile Blvd, Owego)

Friday, July 28th from 9:00-11:00 AM in the Rollie Noble Room at the Village Municipal Building (9 Park St., Newark Valley)

Please call 607-687-4120, ext. 331 to reserve your seat for this free presentation. Information packets are also available upon request.

Drinking water is important for your health. It keeps your energy levels up, stokes your immune system, boosts your metabolism, and can even help you lose weight!

Most of us struggle to drink the recommended 8 glasses or 2-litres daily. Try some of the tips below to drink more water every day without it being a chore.

  • Start your day with water
  • Infuse your water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs
  • Use a straw
  • Sip Tea
  • Cut juice with sparkling water
  • Make your water extra “cool” by adding mint, cucumber, or fresh fruit to your usual ice cube tray.
  • Foods like cucumbers, salad greens, grapefruit, cantaloupe, and (of course) watermelon are high in water content and can help keep you refreshed throughout the day.
