7/31/2020 UPDATE: The application deadline has been extended until Thursday, August 6th.
The NYS Department of Homes and Community Renewal has established an emergency rental assistance program for low-income households who are income eligible and struggling to pay their rent. The COVID Rent Relief Program helps to reduce the rent burden for low-income households during the COVID-19 crisis. Eligible households can receive a one-time rental subsidy that covers the difference between their “rent burden” on March 1, 2020 and their “rent burden” for the months they are applying for assistance. Renters may apply for up to four months of assistance during this period. This one-time subsidy is paid directly to the applicant’s landlord. Applications must be postmarked no later than July 30, 2020. Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) has created a dedicated call center to provide residents with help Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Call the COVID Rent Relief Program Call Center at 1-833-499-0318 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org and visit hcr.ny.gov/RR.
